So How long does it take?


Before being a real estate agent, you must satisfy certain requirements first and they are:


  • You must be at least 18 or 19 years old depending on the state that you are in
  • Be a legal US resident or alien
  • Complete completion of your states pre-license education
  • Passing you real estate license examination in your state.

A majority of states require a certain number of classroom hour and coursework to be completed at real estate schools approved by the states. For example, in Florida, you require up to 63 hours of classes while in New York its 75 hours.


Licensing school


Where you decide to pursue your real estate education will dictate the period it takes to obtain your license. And there are two options for the mode of education:


  • Conventional real estate school- The number of hours offered per week differs from state to state, in most cases, all education requirements on real estate can be fully completed in 4-6 months
  • Online studying- As per the law the online real estate schools have to be accredited, this is one of the popular modes of study as months of study can be significantly reduced to a few weeks depending on your effort and commitment. You can also study at your own pace and there are no limits you can study from anywhere and at any time


Licensing application and examination


This process of both examination procedure and application can take days and even up to weeks for you to finally get the license. Most states in the US have fully automated their license application and sitting for real estate examinations. 


After passing your exams, your license is sent to a brokerage firm for verification and record. It’s also a requirement for you to work under a real estate broker at the beginning of your job.
